Shichi-Go-San, The 7-5-3 Festival in Japan

Shichi-go-san, meaning 7-5-3 is a traditional festival held in Japan on November 15 and it celebrates girls who are 3 and 7 years old, and boys who are 3 and 5 years old. Numbers 3,5 and 7 were chosen because Japanese numerology finds odd numbers lucky.  It's celebrated on 15th because 7+5+3 = 15 and November 15 is consider as the luckiest day in Japan. On this day, parents take boys of 3 and 5 years old and girls of 3 and 7 years old to give thanks to the gods at the temple for a healthy life so far and pray for a safe and successful future.

The festival if Shichi-go-san is named after the ages of the children taking part - seven (shichi), five (go), three (san).

We were lucky enough to have an opportunity to see all the cute kids dressed up for the festival at Kyomizu Temple as it was 15th November 2011 :)
